SUNDAYS AT MOOSEWOOD: ETHNIC & REGIONAL RECIPES FRM COOKS LEGENDARY RESTAURANT
Published in Hardcover by Fireside (October, 1990)

Average review score:

A cookbook to read!
Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant is delicious, providing not only a mix of ethnic recipes to spice up your life, but previews of the various cultures presented and of the individual recipes. The cookbook's in-depth descriptions of how and when to eat the different foods more than compensates for the lack of pictures. For vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, this cookbook is a delight to read.

Teaching English Through Action
Published in Paperback by Berty Segal (01 May, 1995)
Authors: Bertha E. Segal-Cook and Bertha E. Segal Cook
Average review score:

Very practical techniques for learning foreign languages
I first discovered this book when Ms. Segal did a workshop for ESL teachers in my state. She demonstrated the techniques using Yiddish, which none of us knew. Several months later we returned for a follow-up seminar. With no practice in the meantime, I was still able to remember the little Yiddish she had taught us.

I purchased the English and Spanish versions of the books after the seminar. Over the years I have used the techniques to teach English to non-native speakers and Spanish to non-native speakers. I have taught it on the high school and college levels as well as the continuing education level. I have also used her teaching techniques in foreign countries.

The techniques she explains and teaches in her book can be used with people of any culture because they are based on the natural way each of us learns a first language. Because the techniques natural, the language comes alive. It is not just rote memorization, but real language learning. You can use these techniques to enhance a language program or use the lessons as presented in the book.

Tee League to Teen Age (A Parent's Guide to Baseball)
Published in Paperback by Maplerock Press (01 May, 1999)
Author: Jerry Cook
Average review score:

A must for parents of would be all stars.
This book is a great guide for parents and children alike. Not only does it instruct about the rules of baseball, but it also gives the parent instructions on how to encourage their child in a positve way and how to react to various situations that they may encounter in the sport. I was amazed at how much of the terminology I'd never heard before. The author includes a dictionary of the terms and phrases of baseball to help both parent and child better understand the game. There is also a section on equipment and what a child will need and how to determine the correct size, quality, etc. I think that my favorite section deals with the coach, explaining not only what makes a good coach, but also instructing parents and their child in how to deal with the coach effectively. Overall, the book would be a valuable tool for anyone interested in playing or just watching the game.

It's Always A Pleasure To Review A Good Cookbook
Teens Take Over The Kitchen To Cook Italian Treats

Everyone knows that children and teenagers love to eat, but hardly anyone realizes how happily kids love to cook. The problem is that too many cookbooks are written for Julia Childs. The father-daughter team of Charles and Gianna Marotta have solved the problem by writing a cookbook filled with recipes written so clearly that kids can use it to cook fast, healthy, and delicious Italian meals.

There are 100 recipes in this ebook, divided into these categories: Appetizers; Soups; Pasta; Meatless Main Dishes; Main Dishes With Meat; Main Dishes With Chicken; Main Dishes With Seafood; Pizza & Dough; Meatless Side Dishes; and Desserts. The clever names of the dishes will make you and your children laugh: Fowl Balls is a chicken soup with meatballs; Informed Sauces is a collection of various sauces; and The Loin King is an Italian tenderloin steak.

It's always a pleasure to review a good cookbook: the vegetarian food I tested and tasted turned out marvelously. You won't have any trouble navigating this CD: the ebook is well-organized into categories, and also in a master index. Each recipe is rated with one to four stellini -- star-shaped pastas -- to indicate how easy or difficult it is to make the dish.

Written in HTML, the ebook can be read on all computers with a web browser. If you can't bring your computer into the kitchen, then you can choose to print any of the recipes with an easy click on the "print" button.

Every child should experience the joy of cooking. Not only for the pure fun of it, but because working together to prepare a meal is an activity that brings parents and kids closer together.

Teens Takeover The Kitchen is a great way to introduce children to the pleasures of preparing food, and the fun of working together with adults. And you might even begin to break the junk-food habit, by substituting fatty mass-produced burgers with nourishing and scrumptious Italian meals.

That's Fresh!: Seasonal Recipes for Young Cooks
Published in Paperback by Sasquatch Books (June, 1995)
Authors: Braiden Rex-Johnson, David Wasson, and Spencer Johnson
Average review score:

A great book for kids
This is a fantastic book for kids to learn how to cook beyond opening a can of spahgetti. It doesn't make things cutesy, because kids want to eat real food. Not tacos decorated to look like sharks. These are really kid tested and make cooking fun.

Thirteenth Labour of Hercules (Stories)
Published in Paperback by Raduga Pub (January, 1989)
Authors: Fazil Iskander, Robert Daglish, and K.M. Cook-Horujy
Average review score:

If you love Bulgakov, you will love Iskander
These short stories, like most of Iskander's tales and fables, take place in his beloved home, the Muslim region of Abkhazia near Georgia. They range over a great deal of territory--growing up, going to school, rembrances of eccentric characters from the Abkhazia of Iskander's youth. Like Bulgakov's satires, however, Iskander's stories also have a more political substrata. Several stories subtly aim their arrows at the Soviet regime. In one story, Forbidden Fruit, a boy who snitches on his sister for eating pork is punished for his actions. In another, One Day in Summer, the story a German tourist tells our narrator about his experiences under the Nazis seems a critique of Soviet responses to Stalin. In still another, Old Crooked Arm, an eccentric outwits both his friends and the Soviet state.

These are remarkable fables by one of the greatest Russian writers of our time. I heartilly recommend them. Finally, this is a beautifully produced book by Progress/Raduga, well translated by Robert Dalglish and Kathleen Horujy-Cook
